The Pharmafilter system was developed by healthcare professionals to revolutionise how we handle hospital waste and manage wastewater

The system safeguards the environment, patients and public health by decontaminating harmful waste and purifying hospital wastewater at its source

From day to day, hospitals create a significant volume of wastewater that carries chemical and biological micropollutants.

Many of the drugs administered in hospitals are excreted through urine and faeces into hospital wastewater and this contamination cannot be treated at conventional wastewater treatment plants as they are not designed to remove pharmaceutical residues, their metabolites and other micropollutants.

This creates an ideal breeding ground for antimicrobial resistance.

Bacteria with drug resistance can thrive and interact with the bacterial population present at a municipal wastewater treatment plant. This interaction enables bacteria to “learn” resistance to antibiotics, including those critical to the delivery of healthcare and restricted for use in hospitals only.

Infectious Waste Decontamination and Wastewater Purification

See How it Works

In addition to wastewater, hospitals produce large amounts of contaminated hazardous solid waste. Proper management is critical at every stage of this waste journey, from the patient to the waste yard and treatment facility. Each step poses a cross-contamination risk, with the potential to spread infection to patients, staff, visitors, and waste service providers.

This waste must be carefully handled within the hospital to minimise the risk of cross-contamination, contact moments and hospital-acquired infections (HAI).

Traditional methods of waste management are both labour and carbon intensive.

“The Pharmafilter system captures this waste so that it can be treated onsite”

See How it Works

The transport of contaminated waste presents societal and environmental risks, including the potential for accidents during transit and the environmental impact of carbon-intensive transportation methods and decontamination.

Pharmafilter provides an automated solution that decontaminates waste and purifies hospital wastewater at its source, removing all pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, cytotoxins and harmful pathogens and therefore eliminates downstream environmental risks.

(NOTE once a service or utility provider is retained by a hospital and that provider is suitably licensed the hospital is compliant).
